The “Share the Spirit” holiday campaign, sponsored by the Bay Area News Group, recently featured Melodie Smith, a Saffron Strand member who has “overcome running from the law, drug addiction and being jobless.”

“It’s amazing,” Melodie told Angela Ruggiero who covers criminal justice for the East Bay Times, “you can get out of homelessness if you put the work into it. And it is possible, you just have to tackle one thing a day to make your life better … one day at a time.”

On-the-job experience in Saffron Strand’s event catering services played a big part in Melodie’s success. Now Saffron Strand is fundraising to buy a van to expand its catering enterprise and a range of services for homeless members. Make a tax deductible donation here.
